An Existential Threat to Democracy and National Security

Introduction

The current administration’s policies and actions have affected the stability of our democratic institutions, undermine our Constitution, and the effectiveness of our government in serving the common good. These concerns are not simply partisan in nature but speak to a deeper issue of unchecked executive power and Democracy as the bedrock of governance.

President Donald Trump’s administration has been criticized for its constitutionally questionable action. His unlawful use of the national guard in American cities and the actions and abuses of ICE are key examples. Such actions have direct and negative impacts on democracy.

The administration’s tariff policies, intended to bolster domestic industries, have instead resulted in unintended harm. Rather than strengthening the nation’s economic position, these tariffs have fostered animosity and adversarial relationships with some of America’s closest allies. Trade wars have disrupted global supply chains, increased costs for American consumers, and damaged longstanding partnerships that are vital for national security and economic prosperity.

President Trump’s controversial attempt to acquire Greenland is another example of presidential overreach that has strained relationships with NATO partners. Such actions not only create animosity but also undermine the trust and cooperation necessary for effective alliances. Maintaining strong relationships with international partners is critical for addressing shared security challenges and promoting global stability.

The repeated closures of the national government under the current administration have further eroded public trust in institutions and leaders. These shutdowns disrupt essential services, jeopardize the livelihoods of working Americans, and weaken the social safety net that supports the most vulnerable. Effective governance requires stability, transparency, and a commitment to the common good.

While the design of American democracy allows for majorities within the executive and legislative branches, the Constitution serves as a crucial check on majority rule. When the executive branch oversteps its constitutional authority with impunity it jeopardizes the delicate balance that ensures fair and equal treatment for all citizens.

In this time of uncertainty and division, there is an urgent need to revisit and reaffirm the core values that define American democracy. A renewed commitment to the Constitution, the rule of law, and the principles of fair and equal governance is essential for restoring public trust and ensuring that government serves the interests of all Americans. Only by standing up for and embracing our Democracy can the nation overcome the existential threats it faces with the current republican presidential administration.

They cannot be reduced to mere partisan disagreements but stem from deeper issues of executive overreach and erosion of institutional trust. We can start by limiting President Trump’s control over the government with a strong mid-term election from Democrats, peaceful protest and demanding accountability from local and national elected leaders and mount a vigorous legal fight to counter ever constitutional overreach and violation committed by the president’s administration.
